"Investing in the education of girls has a high pay off" says Christopher Colclough, the director of the Global Monitoring Report. "Education helps to increase productivity to a significant level and the family is the very nucleus of any society. Within the family environment, a woman holds a primary role as a wife, mother, and worker".

We want our girls to become assets to their community so that they can compete competitively for jobs upon graduation. Educated girls add to household incomes therefore reducing poverty. They also increase personal and social well-being. When parents, in particular mothers, are educated, their children will be healthier, better nourished and have a greater chance of going to school and doing well.

Investing in educating girls now is one of the best ways of ensuring that future generations will be educated.

"Girls continue to face sharp discrimination" - United Nations Literacy Decade 2003-2012

TIMELINE AND BACKGROUND

  • 2014 Founders, Adam and Mariam met OiN CEO to discuss the construction of an orphanage in Pakistan. Instruction was given to draft proposals on how to proceed.
  • 2015 A donor had come forward who wished to donate his land in the city of Rawalpindi in the province of Punjab for a project such as this. He was a British businessman who had emigrated to the same city from the UK. This seemed to be the most feasible plan as the costs that would otherwise have gone into purchasing the land could now go into the actual construct. The land donor requested to manage the project with OiN and to get fully involved with the charity to launch this project. His requests were accepted. Utilising his vast links and extensive knowledge, he proved to be an invaluable partner to manage the project.
  • 2015 A five storey building plus a basement and a roof terrace was designed and costings were forecast. Building works commenced.
  • April 2017 Adam and Mariam flew out to visit the site. They also visited many other running orphanages to brainstorm factors that could be implemented.
  • December 2017 construction work completed.
  • 2018 Interior furnishings of some apartments were completed ready to accommodate some girls.
  • The Home was named Bait e Mariam (BeM) Staff were recruited.
  • March 2018 First 8 girl's admissions confirmed ages 5 to 13
  • December 2019 On site school completed and girls now being fully educated from the premises.

Admissions from across all 4 regions of Pakistan are in the orphanage. They currently house 70 plus girls from ages 3 to 16.  The inhouse school is of a better standard than most of the local schools. In addition to the core subjects, they are also learning English, Arabic, Arts and PE from specialist tutors.
There are spaces for 30 more girls.
Plan of the building

1. Basement - for the TV Lounge, IT suite, sports hall / school classrooms

2. Ground floor – Reception, Madam’s (Head of the orphanage) office and living quarters and one apartment with 4 bedrooms (with bathroom/shower and toilets), lounge and kitchen.

3. First floor – Two apartments. One apartment with 4 bedrooms (with bathroom/shower and toilets), lounge and kitchen. Second apartment with 3 bedrooms (with bathroom/shower and toilets), lounge and kitchen.

4. Second floor – Two apartments. One apartment with 4 bedrooms (with bathroom/shower and toilets), lounge and kitchen. Second apartment with 3 bedrooms (with bathroom/shower and toilets), lounge and kitchen.

5. Third floor – Two apartments. One apartment with 4 bedrooms (with bathroom/shower and toilets), lounge and kitchen. Second apartment with 3 bedrooms (with bathroom/shower and toilets), lounge and kitchen.

In each apartment one of the bedrooms will be given to the live-in mother, the remaining bedrooms will be for the children. This will remove the institutionalised aspect to the building and instead give the girls the experience of having a home and family type structure. Also learning the domestic skill sets that they would have done in a normal home environment.
